So, my Mom lives in Hermitage, TN, which is a little town outside
of Nashville. She bought her house in December of 2002. In
spring of 2003, a contractor started building houses in the lots next
door to her. The lot directly to her right is on a large bed of
rock-- the exposed rock faced her house-- and they have had to do all
kinds of finagling to get a house up there, try and bury the pipes for
plumbing, etc. They have also gotten concrete on the siding to
her house, torn up her yard and flower beds, ripped limbs off of her
tree, and parked a port-a-potty out front for the better part of two
years. The houses have changed owners, changed builders,
etc. Finally, Mom had had enough when the bobcat driver HIT HER
HOUSE and cracked her siding. Background-- my aunt owns a firm that does background investigations, pre-employment screenings and private investigation. My uncle works for her as a PI, and my Mom is their bookkeeper. After some hunting, they find that there are no permits for the construction, there have been no inspections (which explains alot, if you could see these houses) and Uncle R.. put in a call to the city inspector. Mom called her councilman. Her councilman drove over and checked everything out. So did the city inspector. And they issued a warrant for the arrest of the builder-- he had so many complaints against him, that was the next step. (His wife told Uncle R. when he was hunting for him "They can't arrest him!". Um, yes they can. He's the responsible party-- he might want to start returning some of those phone calls to his office and cell phone, chickie.) Mom has been assured that in 10 days, her yard will be resodded, her house will be fixed, etc. As long as everything is done and up to code, and Mom is satisfied that her property is OK, they won't arrest the builder. Of course, if they finish the construction the port-a-potty will go and where will the UPS and USPS drivers take care of business? :) I'm just impressed that a councilperson actually responded to something-- he physically went and checked out her house and the construction next door, called her and followed up with her, and helped get the builder guy to fix everything. Yay small town! |
